Dental disease is not only one of the leading causes of bad breath, but it also contributes to other health problems including chronic pain and heart disease. Tartar and plaque contain bacterial toxins that enter the bloodstream and find their way into many organs, including the heart.
Valet Vet and our veterinarians recommend at-home dental care as part of a complete wellness plan for your pet. At each wellness exam, our team will examine the overall oral health of your pet to help determine when a Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment (COHAT) may be recommended. COHATs include full mouth dental X-rays, complete oral exam, teeth scaling, and polishing. Signs to monitor for that will help us determine if your pet needs a COHAT (teeth cleaning) include:
- Bad breath
- Red, swollen or bleeding gums
- Discolored teeth
- Mobile teeth
